Dignity Action Day 2024

02 Jan 2024

Across the UK, thousands of adults receive some form of social care every day, on a variety of different scales. The care sector is such an important service which makes a huge difference to the lives of those in care, as well as their loved ones. So, this is why Dignity Action Day is celebrated.

When is Dignity Action Day?

February 1st marks Dignity Action Day 2024. We should constantly support and value the rights of carers and their clients, however, February 1st is a chance to dedicate some extra thought and time to the matter.

What is Dignity Action Day?

Dignity Action Day is an annual opportunity to celebrate those who work in and use care services. Dignity Action Day aims to “ensure people who use care services are treated as individuals and are given choice, control and a sense of purpose in their daily lives.” This day serves as a reminder that we all have a part to play in upholding dignity in care. It promotes ways we can celebrate this and deepen our understanding of the topic.

Who is Dignity in Care?

Dignity in Care is an amazing charity whose core values include changing the culture of care services and placing a greater emphasis on improving the quality of care for those using these services. If you are looking for resources to help you develop your understanding of their values, the team has created a list of Dignity Do’s describing the understanding and actions of members. These actions include having a zero tolerance on all forms of abuse, treating each person as an individual with a personalised service, and respecting people’s right to privacy. We should recognise these actions throughout the year, but particularly on Dignity Action Day 2024.

What can I do for Dignity Action Day?

If you are a personal care assistant or work in a care home, then there are lots of ways of supporting Dignity Action Day. If you work with just one individual, why not cook their favourite meal followed by an activity they enjoy? Or, if you are a carer in a care home, involve everyone and enjoy a day of celebration. It’s the perfect day to give your clients a truly memorable day.

Need inspiration? Dignity in Care has created a memory book which has been designed to capture the memories of all the activities dedicated to the Dignity Campaign. This includes dignity tree creation, English afternoon tea and the power of sports, sure to inspire you. Once you have made a decision, you can add your pledge or activity to the website.

Need some ideas on how to improve dignity? Here are a few:

  • Educate: You can hold workshops and sessions with care staff to help educate and enhance their understanding of how to spread dignity in the workplace.
  • Spread the message: Speak with friends and family about the importance of dignity and how it can have a positive impact on those living with disabilities or who need a carer.
  • Share ideas: Come up with ways you can help improve the lives of people living in care homes or who have a carer. Sharing ideas is a fantastic way to help others or improve current processes.

What about the carers on Dignity Action Day?

As well as celebrating all the fantastic people using care services throughout the UK, this is also a day dedicated to the incredible things our care workers do on a day-to-day basis. If your family member or loved one is a personal care assistant, why not go that extra mile to make their day really special and show a big “thank you” from the nation.

Dignity Action Day 2024 is a really significant day in the year, because it gives you and your loved ones a chance to show appreciation for our caring community. It gives you the chance to do something to make someone smile which is always important and now more than ever. Let’s continue to work to make the UK care service a place of positivity and respect.
