Dignity Action Day 2021
29 Jan 2021
Across the UK, thousands of adults receive some form of social care every day, on a variety of different scales. Our team at Blue Badge are passionate about supporting not only those who access these services but also our incredible health and social care workers who dedicate their lives to helping others. This is such an important service which makes a huge difference for the lives of the individuals, as well as their loved ones. The first of February 2021 marks Dignity Action Day 2021. We should constantly be supporting and valuing the rights of carers and their clients, however, February 1st is a chance to dedicate some extra thought and time to the matter.
Dignity Action Day allows us to celebrate those who use care services. The aim of the day is to “ensure people who use care services are treated as individuals and are given choice, control and a sense of purpose in their daily lives.” This day serves as a reminder that we all have a part to play in upholding dignity in care. It promotes ways we can celebrate this and deepen our understanding of the topic.
Who is Dignity in Care?
Dignity in Care is an amazing charity whose core values include changing the culture of care services and placing a greater emphasis on improving the quality of care for those using these services. If you are looking for resources which can help you develop your understanding of their values, the team has created a list of Dignity Do’s which describes the understanding and actions of members, including having a zero tolerance on all forms of abuse, treating each person as an individual with a personalised service, and respecting peoples right to privacy. These are all key elements which should be recognised throughout the year, and particularly on Dignity Action Day 2021.
What can I do?
Do you work as a personal care assistant or work in a care home? Then this is the perfect opportunity to make your clients day special. If you work with just one individual, why not cook their favourite meal followed by an activity they enjoy? If you work in a care home, get everyone involved and enjoy a day of celebration. Need inspiration? Dignity in Care has created a memory book which has been designed to capture the memories of all the activities dedicated to the Dignity Campaign. This includes dignity tree creation, English afternoon tea and the power of sports, sure to inspire you. Once you have made a decision, you can add your pledge or activity to the website.
What about the carers?
As well as celebrating all the fantastic people using care services throughout the UK, this is also a day dedicated to the incredible things our care workers do on a day to day basis. Particularly with the challenges the pandemic has posed, it’s incredible to see so many people doing so much. The team at Blue Badge are so thrilled to see the selfless acts that our carers across the country are contributing. If your family member or loved one is a personal care assistant, why not go that extra mile to make their day really special and show a big “thank you” from the nation.
Dignity Action Day 2021 is a really significant day in the year, whereby you and your loved ones have a chance to show appreciation for our caring community. It gives you the chance to do something to make someone smile which is always important and now more than ever. Let’s continue to work to make UK care services places of positivity and respect.
