Your Travel Insurance Checklist

Step 1

Contact your airline at least 48 hours before flying to confirm any special assistance requests and wheelchair dimensions.

Even if you have specified these things when booking, it's important o double check and confirm!

Step 2

Take clear, date-stamped photos of your wheelchair or any mobility aids you may have, from all angles.

If they then unfortunately get damaged in transit, these photos will be crucial evidence for both the airline and your newly purchased insurance policy, as airports are known for not accepting liability.

Step 3

Print your travel insurance policy number, their 24/7 emergency hotline, and a laminated list of your medications and emergency contacts.

Most modern travel insurance documents can be accessed via your mobile, however it's good to have physical backups, just in case.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Should I always declare my disability when buying travel insurance?

Yes. You must declare any disability or pre-existing condition when purchasing travel insurance.

All insurers require a process called medical screening, where you answer questions about your medications, recent hospital visits, daily assistance needs and anything else surrounding your health. Failure to declare your disability (or any associated health conditions) will likely invalidate your policy. If you need emergency medical care or cancellation cover linked to an undeclared condition, the insurer will reject the claim, leaving you personally liable for all costs.

Is my mobility equipment (things like wheelchairs or scooters) covered by travel insurance?

Standard travel insurance policies usually place strict caps on baggage claims (often £200–£500 per single item), which is far below the cost of replacing or repairing specialised mobility equipment. However, Free Spirit Insurance offer a range of policies that extend this limit, so you can have peace of mind when transporting your equipment:

Policy Level Limit per Person Excess Payable
Standard Up to £500 £150 per claim
Super Up to £1,000 £95 per claim
Super Duper Up to £2,000 £0 (Nil excess)*

*Please note that if an airline damages your mobility equipment, you must file your claim at the airport before leaving. Airlines frequently reject liability for damages reported after you have exited the terminal.*

Does travel insurance cover my carer or travel companion if I fall ill?

Yes, but only if they are insured on the same policy or a linked companion policy.

For more information surrounding our policies in regards to carers, please contact us.

Does a UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) replace disabled travel insurance?

No, a GHIC does not replace private travel insurance.

While a GHIC (previously EHIC) gives UK residents access to state-provided emergency medical care in EU countries on the same terms as local citizens, it has major limitations:

  • It does not cover private clinic treatment or specialised accessible medical transport.

  • It does not cover emergency air repatriation back to the UK (which can easily cost £10,000 to £70,000+).

  • It provides zero protection for lost mobility aids, stolen prescribed medications, or holiday cancellations due to health flare-ups.
